The prosecution of independent journalist Aidan Kearney—who faces decades in prison for his abrasive coverage of the Karen Read murder case—is a chilling weaponization of Massachusetts’ witness intimidation statute to silence a vocal government critic. 
Blocked by civil judges who explicitly ruled his speech was constitutionally protected, the Commonwealth engineered 16 felony indictments through a highly manipulated grand jury, relying on deceptively renamed video clips, uncharged wiretap smears, and a deeply compromised civilian informant named Kate Peter. Defense filings reveal that state prosecutors colluded with Peter to manipulate Kearney's ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Gaetani, into a trap that resulted in his 60-day jail stint, only for Gaetani to later sue the lead detective and special prosecutor for exploiting her private records. 
Ultimately, the state's desperate efforts to criminalize Kearney's activism, satire, and public scrutiny under the subjective guise of "emotional harm" represent a profound threat to the First Amendment, proving that for those who dare to challenge local corruption, the legal process itself has become the punishment.
