In 1938, America's richest copper mine shut down overnight. In Northern Tanzania, a blood-red lake with a mirror-perfect surface lures birds to their deaths—then preserves their bodies as calcified statues. Lake Natron's caustic waters can burn human skin in seconds, reach temperatures of 140°F, and have a pH almost as high as ammonia.
