How Star Wars Saved NPR: The Untold Story of the Star Wars Radio Dramas

    10/07/2026 | 1 h 13 min
In 1977, NPR was on the brink of losing its audience and its funding. Then came an unlikely lifeline: Star Wars. In this episode of Father Son Galaxy, we sit down with Maria Jose Tenuto and John Tenuto, authors of The Star Wars Radio Dramas: Brian Daley and the Serialization That Saved NPR, to unpack how a scrappy radio adaptation, turned a galaxy far, far away into a ratings phenomenon and helped rescue public radio in America. We dig into the USC connection that started it all, George Lucas's surprisingly modest asking price, standout performances from the new cast (including Brock Peters), and the emotional, 13-year road to Return of the Jedi's radio premiere.

From the Lagos opening to the airport hangar brawl to that gut-punch finale in Siberia, it's a conversation about trauma, loyalty, and choosing sides—and why this one Avengers movie still sparks debate a decade later.

(Mild spoilers ahead for a movie that's had 10 years to spread the word.) Join the conversation across generations, only on Father.Son.Galaxy.

This compilation brings together dads whose lives have been shaped by this galaxy: the legendary Billy Dee Williams, Pete Fletzer (author of Who Owns the Myth? Star Wars Fandom and the Soul of the Saga), Leland Chee, Todd Hoffman of Big T and Lil T, Raphael Moran from The Geeky Dad Podcast, the crew from The Dad Batch, and autism Dad and advocate Jamiel Owens. Each of them carries their own version of the same story: a movie that became a lifelong bond between father and child.

How Star Wars Changed Science Fiction and Fantasy Films

    26/05/2026 | 52 min
We are kicking off a massive, year-long celebration! Starting today, May 25th, 2026, Father.Son.Galaxy. is counting down to the upcoming 50th anniversary of Star Wars. Over the next year, we are dedicating special episodes to exploring how a galaxy far, far away completely reshaped pop culture.
In this premiere episode, Kerwin is joined by award-winning author John Kenneth Muir to discuss his book, "Science Fiction and Fantasy Films of the 1970s". Together, they explore the cinematic landscape prior to May 1977—an era dominated by dark, dystopian themes and cautionary tales like Logan’s Run, Soylent Green, and The Omega Man. They also examine how the massive success of Star Wars shifted the industry, paving the way for a wave of late-1970s sci-fi and fantasy milestones, including Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Moonraker, Alien, and Disney's The Black Hole.
