Please listen with care. The Goler Clan case is one of the most harrowing, and somewhat hidden, tragedies in North American history: a remote, impoverished community in the hills of Nova Scotia where generational incest, abuse, and neglect went unchecked for decades. What outsiders dismissed as a "hillbilly sex ring” was, in reality, a closed-off world where children were trapped in cycles of violence they couldn’t name and had almost no power to escape. When authorities finally intervened in the 1980s, what they uncovered was devastating: a closed community so isolated, so ignored, that the line between victim and perpetrator had blurred across generations. The arrests that followed shattered the quiet of the Annapolis Valley and exposed the brutal truth of what had been going on for decades. This is a case steeped in horrific darkness, and every detail forces us to confront the uncomfortable question: how many horrors thrive simply because no one bothers to look, care, or act? • EP154: Ed Gein: Skull Bowls and Nipple Belts (Part 2)
Join our Patreon family! (www.Patreon.com/PsychopediaPod) You'll get AD FREE episodes, merch discounts, exclusive content, extra true crime cases, behind-the-scenes, private group chats, and much more!  Instagram + TikTok: @investigatorslater  In Part 2 of our in-depth, two-part coverage of Ed Gein, we explore the years following his mother’s death — when grief, repression, and obsession finally cracked open. Gein escalated from grave-robbing to murder, driven by a delusional need to resurrect his dead mother and a grotesque desire to quite literally step into her skin.  Eventually, inside his farmhouse, investigators uncovered a nightmare stitched together from human remains: masks, corsets, lampshades, skulls, belts, and even a box containing the genitalia of nine different women. It was a discovery that redefined American horror. This episode unpacks the psychology behind Gein’s depravity, including his warped devotion to his domineering mother, his dissociation, and his fixation with anatomy. We also confront the question that still divides experts today: was Ed Gein criminally insane?  Because the truth isn’t that Ed Gein was born evil.  It’s that he was built by the only woman he ever loved... • EP153: Ed Gein: Skull Bowls and Nipple Belts (Part 1)
Please consider supporting the show on Patreon! (www.Patreon.com/PsychopediaPod) Join to get AD FREE episodes, merch discounts, exclusive content, extra true crime cases, behind-the-scenes, private group chats, and much more!  Instagram + TikTok: @investigatorslater  In Part 1 of our in-depth two-part coverage of Ed Gein, the groundwork is laid for one of the most depraved and psychologically unhinged figures in criminal history. Ed Gein, aka The Butcher of Plainfield, was a man destroyed by the death of the only person he'd ever truly known and loved: his mother. For his entire life, Augusta Gein ruled Ed with a Bible in one hand and a clenched fist in the other.  She shamed every flicker of desire, punished every natural impulse, and convinced Ed that all women were wicked, sex was sin, and men were filth. Under her suffocating control, Ed’s identity didn’t form — it fossilized. So when Augusta finally died, Ed didn’t just grieve; he unraveled.  Night after night, he crept into cemeteries under the Wisconsin moon to exhume the bodies of dead women who reminded him of his mother.  Then, he dragged them back to his rancid farmhouse where he hung, carved, and skinned their corpses. Piece by piece, he built what he called a “woman suit,” stitched from human skin and shaped in his mother’s image. It wasn’t enough to love Augusta, or even to worship her. Ed Gein wanted to be her....to climb into her flesh, zip it up, and walk the earth as his mother reborn. • EP152: Slit-Mouthed Woman: Am I Pretty? (feat. Bridget Marquardt of Ghost Bunny and Girls Next Level podcasts)
Please consider supporting the show on Patreon! (www.Patreon.com/PsychopediaPod) Join to get AD FREE episodes, merch discounts, exclusive content, behind-the-scenes, private group chats, and much more! In this episode, I'm joined by special guest Bridget Marquardt of Ghost Bunny and Girls Next Level podcasts! The legend of Kuchisake-onna, aka the Slit-Mouthed Woman, has haunted Japan for centuries. She’s said to appear on empty streets after dark, her face hidden behind a surgical mask and her voice low as she asks one pointed question: “Am I pretty?”  If you answer wrong, or even hesitate, the Slit-Mouthed Woman will remove hrt mask to reveal a mouth carved from ear to ear before chasing you down to make sure you match.  Some say that in life, she was the unfaithful wife of a samurai who was punished for her betrayal. Others claim she’s the spirit of a woman disfigured and left to rot. But whatever the truth, beneath the legend lies something deeper: a dissection of beauty, shame, and female rage. Because in a world obsessed with perfection, the Slit-Mouthed Woman isn’t just a ghost - she’s a mirror. And what she reflects is far more terrifying than the blade she carries... • EP151: They Came Through the Mirror: The Real Candyman Murder [SPOOKYPEDIA]
Join the Patreon family!! You'll get AD FREE episodes, merch discounts, exclusive content, behind-the-scenes, private group chats, and much more! (www.Patreon.com/PsychopediaPod) You know the legend: say his name five times in the mirror and Candyman appears. But before the hook-handed ghost ever terrified you in your nightmares, there was a real woman in Chicago whose screams went unanswered.  In 1987, 52-year-old Ruthie Mae McCoy called 911, terrified that someone was breaking into her apartment through her bathroom mirror. Hours later, Ruthie Mae was dead. What followed was a horrifying chain of neglect, systemic failure, and indifference that would later inspire one of horror’s most iconic stories.  This episode uncovers the real tragedy that birthed the Candyman myth, which was Ruthie Mae’s fight for safety inside Chicago’s most dangerous public housing project, the police who didn’t listen, and the killers who slipped through the walls like ghosts.  Before there was Candyman, there was Ruthie Mae McCoy....and her story is far more terrifying than fiction.
