Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary also spelled Mahmud Khalil Al Husary or Sheikh Mahmoud Khalíl Al Hussary was a highly distinguished and influential Quran reciter from Egypt.
Born in 1917 in the village of Shobra An-Namla Tanta Gharbia Governorate Egypt, he began memorizing the Quran at a very young age and completed his memorization by the age of eight. He went on to study at Al-Azhar University, mastering the ten Qira’at or recitation styles of the Quran.
Sheikh Al-Husary was one of the first reciters to have his complete Quranic recitation recorded and broadcast worldwide, making his voice synonymous with Quranic recitation for millions. He was known for his precise Tajweed, clear pronunciation, and adherence to the rules of recitation. While he primarily recited in the Hafs ‘an Asim narration, he also recorded the Quran in other authentic narrations, including the Warsh ‘an Naafi’ narration. Warsh ‘an Naafi’ is a widely recognized method of reciting the Quran transmitted through Imam Warsh from Imam Nafi’ al-Madani, and it is especially prominent in North and West African countries. His Warsh recitation is highly valued for its accuracy and beauty.
He held prominent positions, including being appointed as the Sheikh of the Quran reciters in Egypt. He served as an Imam in various mosques and was a global ambassador for the Quran, traveling extensively to recite and teach. He passed away in 1980, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy and a vast collection of recordings that remain a standard for Quranic recitation.
