In Isaiah 53:4–5, the prophet foretold of a Messiah who would bear the sins and suffering of humanity. Preaching from this passage, Prof April Westbrook explores the depth of brokenness in our world and the greater love of God that reaches into it. Jesus came not only to bear our suffering, but also to lift us out of our brokenness and restore us to wholeness. He then invites us to partner with Him in His redemptive work in the world. This is the love of God that sets His people free.

When God created humanity, He made both male and female in His image (Genesis 1:26–28), entrusting them with a shared calling and responsibility. Prof April Westbrook explains that Pentecostalism is inherently egalitarian because the Holy Spirit empowers all believers, regardless of gender, age, or status. With the Fall, however, this God-given empowerment became distorted, and domination and gender hierarchy entered human relationships. In Christ, there is redemption and restoration—a return to God’s original intention of shared responsibility, mutual submission, and Spirit-empowered partnership.

God desires for all believers to mirror Jesus in love, power, and character. The greatest work of the Spirit is not merely what He puts into our hands, but what He produces in our hearts. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 13, Dr Keener explains that gifts such as prophecy and tongues remain relevant until Christ returns and believers see Him “face to face.” Scripture presents all spiritual gifts as empowered by God, and as believers, we are to pursue love while eagerly desiring the gifts of the Spirit to build up the body of Christ.
