Reel Spoilers - Movie Reviews

Trust no one. Not even the podcast hosts.

Matt F. Basler returns to Reel Spoilers as we head to Antarctica for John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi horror masterpiece, The Thing. A movie so horrifying, so ahead of its time, and so spectacularly disgusting that audiences in 1982 apparently decided they'd rather watch a friendly alien eat Reese's Pieces.

We're digging into the film's legendary practical effects, its disastrous box office performance, the critics who got it wrong (and the ones who didn't), and why Kurt Russell makes everything better. Plus, we explore the bizarre rules of alien assimilation, the infamous blood test, the prequel's questionable decisions, and the burning question that's fueled decades of internet arguments: Who, if anyone, is actually The Thing at the end?

Along the way, we debate whether The Thing is better than Alien, investigate its comic book and video game sequels, question the state of modern media literacy, and somehow spend an alarming amount of time discussing Giant-Size Man-Thing.

It's paranoia, practical effects, conspiracy theories, and a whole lot of nonsense. Just another perfectly normal episode of Reel Spoilers.

Wow. There is a lot to unpack in the nearly 3-hour-long documentary, YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING, directed by Nathan Fielder (Nathan For You, The Rehearsal) and Lance Oppenheim (Primetime) about disgraced and imprisoned Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. But this film is so much more than your typical documentary, and we think it has a good chance at winning big at the Oscars this year. Find out why the latest from A24 has everyone talking.

You may have heard of a little company called Facebook. Maybe even saw a tiny, indie movie called THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Well now it has a "sequel," if you can call it that, directed this time by writer Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. Find out all about The Facebook Files, thanks to whistleblower Frances Haugen and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, in THE SOCIAL RECKONING. To be continued...?

Joe may have his personal feelings about Tom Cruise, but he has to call it like he sees it! If you haven't figured it out by the title, we had some positive things to say about the performances in DIGGER - but did we love the movie overall? Find out now!
