• #90* Now and Then Recorded Live at the Fest for Beatles Fans with Blotto Beatles

  If you thought "One After 909" took a long time to gestate, it's nowhere NEAR the journey for "Now and Then." As we all know, it was one of the songs given to the Threetles by Yoko to complete, but it's sonic shortcomings couldn't be solved by the technology of the 90s. But then, seemingly out of nowhere during our ongoing tumultous time period, The Beatles did what The Beatles always do. They show up with something to make us all smile a little more and put a little more love into the world. Whatever it's initial intent was or wasn't, "Now and Then" represents a powerful conclusion of the recorded output of the entity known as The Beatles. And it's just beautiful.This episode was recorded LIVE at the Fest for Beatles Fans at Jersey City in March of this year in collaboration with our pals, Blotto Beatles. A splendid time was had by all, and for our first ever live podcast, we think it went pretty darn well. • #178 - Octopus' Garden with The Beths

  Originally released March 16, 2021Sometimes, all it takes to write a signature song is...quitting your band. During a sabbatical from the tense White Album sessions of 1968, a trip on Peter Sellers' boat gave Ringo the inspiration for "Octopus's Garden." With a little help from his friends, George in particular, he was able to put together something that's incredibly charming and fun, and the last example of the band all pulling together to support their beloved drummer; it's a stellar performance all around, and a sonic gem, along with the rest of Abbey Road. As childlike and saccharine as it may be though, is it possible this is a much deeper song, where Ringo's really seeking out some shelter from the storm around him? Could this be his "Help"?We're joined this week by Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pearce, 1/2 of the New Zealand-based rock band The Beths. Their latest album Jump Rope Gazers, out now on Carpark Records, was in our top 3 albums of 2020, a literal constant quarantine companion. It's linked in our Linktree above. Over the last few years, their blend of propulsive, sing-along choruses, four-part vocal arrangements, and wry, introspective lyrics has earned them fans around the world, as well as opening slots for indie rock titans like The Breeders, Pixies, Weezer, and Death Cab for Cutie.   It's weird how many songs the Beatles have that aren't "hits" but are still universally loved. It seems everyone knows and loves "I've Just Seen A Face," despite never being a single and never appearing on the big compilations. Maybe it's just one that's found a way to sink its' teeth into anyone who's ever known the rush of new love. Maybe it's just one of those classic Paul melodies. Maybe it's the kind of country, kind of rock, kind of acoustic line it seems to walk so well. Maybe it's all of those. • #73 - Blackbird with Allan Kozinn (author, The McCartney Legacy)

  McCartney's ability to craft the most capitvating, simple, and gorgeous melodies never fails to amaze. Conceived (we think/he tells us) as a song of encouragement and support for the civil rights movement, in full swing by 1968, "Blackbird" has become one of Paul's signature songs. It was the title of his poetry collection. It's one of the most tattoo'd Beatle lyrics and imagery. It's one of his best, and he knows it, and we know it. Joining us this week is Allan Kozinn, co-author of the brilliant McCartney Legacy book series. Vol.2 dropped at the end of 2024, and like Vol. 1 before,has garnered rave reviews. • #74 - Julia with Jude Southerland Kessler

  One of the best things about the White Album is seeing so many different sides of each Beatle. To close out the first disc, we get a rare glimpse of the really vulnerable and sensitive John, a side we really haven't seen laid bare prior to this. It's a gorgeous track, lead by an almost hypnotic finger picking pattern, with a single note, bare lead vocal practically forcing you to listen to what he's singing about. Of course Julia was his mother, but is this just a song to/about her? I'd always thought so, until this conversation.Joining us this week is the always wonderful Jude Southerland Kessler, the author of The John Lennon series. Jude always seems to know just how to blow our minds with her knowledge and telling of John's story, and this episode is no different. The newest book in the series, Volume 5.2, which is called Some Forever ,Shades of Life Pt 2 covers August of 1965-1966 and contrary to what we discuss in the episode, will be out around August of this year (darn printing delays!).
