Nine months ago, Adrian Newey was talking modestly and preventing hype from reigning supreme. Now? His face is the symbol of the Formula 1 team. On top of that, the AMR26 F1 car we saw in Barcelona for the Formula One shakedown will not be the same car we see in Australia for the first round of the season. As the Mercedes W17 was formally launched (despite being first seen almost two weeks ago), the team and its principal Toto Wolff exerted their confidence regarding the rules for the 2026 F1 season...and the latter made his feelings clear about certain teams continuing the push for clarification regarding engine compression limits and how they're measured. Let's say it got colourful.

As that's going on, Haas' Ayao Komatsu commented that perhaps said engine tweak may not be the biggest game-changer for Formula 1 teams...energy management might be. Exactly what Mercedes has bet the farm on. Could the engine talk be some kind of distraction from the real deal?

I know it's testing, but we got SOME clues as to which F1 team handled it better than others.

With the first showcase of 2026 F1 cars behind us, we may not know times or the proper pecking order of teams...but Ferrari managed to throw some surprises in our way with their SAFE car. They might have a faster one if the FIA approves it. Could that be the thing that keeps them as the Mercedes challenger and Lewis Hamilton a chance for some proper Ferrari success in 2026 AND to keep Charles Leclerc for another year?

Then there's also the matter of Red Bull. Do they have a car and engine which pleases Max Verstappen? Well, for now, yes. However it's early days but plenty to smile about...unlike with Audi who suffered the most issues of any team...and McLaren? It was a decent start but not a hot one; same for Aston Martin.

The first Adrian Newey designed car from Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll's team introduced itself around Spain at the very end of the fourth day of Barcelona's F1 shakedown to great interest...but that all got muted by a precautionary end to proceedings just four or five laps later. Not the best start.

However, with Alonso increasing the lap count of Day 5, could the achievement of even making it to the test at all be a sign of the Formula 1's team ambition? Are the innovations made by Newey, Cardile et al be the key to provide the team their first Formula One victory? Time will tell, but it was certainly not a boring start!

James Vowles took to his F1 team's social media feeds to discuss what's going on with their 2026 machine, since it has missed the first ever Formula 1 test session of the season. In it, he denies rumours regarding FIA chassis crash test failures and a supposed heavy car. Does this go some way to dispel worries about the Formula One team? Yes, but it is still a calculated move.
