The Misery Machine

This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Queens, New York, to discuss the case of 3-year-old Autumn Coleman, also known as Zoey Pereira. On the night of May 5th, 2019, first responders found a burning Audi sedan near Baisley Boulevard and 155th Street in Springfield Gardens, Queens. Autumn was strapped into a car seat in the back of the vehicle. To prevent her escape or rescue, her father, Martin "Tony" Pereira, had doused the car in gasoline and chained the rear doors shut from the inside. Investigators also found propane tanks and gas canisters intended to fuel the fire. Firefighters managed to pull Autumn from the wreckage after the heat from the flames melted the door handle, allowing them to break through the chains. She was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center but died shortly after from severe burns and smoke inhalation. Hours before the murder, Tony reportedly called Autumn's mother, Cherone Coleman, and told her, "You’ll never see your daughter again."

This week, Drewby and Yergy travel to France to discuss the case of Lola Daviet, a 12-year-old Parisian schoolgirl and gymnastics champion whose brutal murder shocked the whole country and became a focal point for intense national debate on immigration and security. On October 14th, 2022, Lola was abducted after returning from her school, Collège Georges Brassens, in the 19th Arrondissement (District) of Paris. Her body was found by a homeless man later that evening inside of a plastic storage trunk. Dahbia Benkired, a 24-year-old Algerian national who was in France on an expired visa, was arrested and charged with her murder.

This week, Drewby and Yergy do something a little different... We'll be discussing the case of 34-year-old Jonathan Gerlach of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, who was arrested in January 2026 for allegedly stealing human remains from the historic Mount Moriah Cemetery. Investigators discovered over 100 sets of human remains, including skulls and mummified parts, at his home and storage unit. He faces hundreds of criminal counts, including burglary, abuse of a corpse, and desecration of public monuments, and is currently held on $1 million bail.

This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Oakland, California, to discuss the case of 18-year-old Nia Wilson, a beautiful young woman who had dreams of joining the military or becoming a paramedic so that she could help people. On the evening of July 22nd, 2018, Nia and her sisters, Letifah and Tashiya, were transferring trains at the MacArthur BART station in Oakland after attending a family party. Without provocation or prior interaction, 27-year-old John Lee Cowell approached them from behind and slashed Nia’s throat, also stabbing Letifah in the neck. Nia died at the scene within minutes. Letifah survived the attack with serious injuries. Tashiya was not physically harmed. John was arrested the following day at the Pleasant Hill BART station after a passenger recognized him from surveillance footage and tipped off police. During the trial, John's defense argued he was legally insane, citing a history of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. John himself gave bizarre testimony, claiming the sisters were "aliens."
