The Misery Machine

This week, Drewby and Yergy do something a little different... We'll be discussing the case of 34-year-old Jonathan Gerlach of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, who was arrested in January 2026 for allegedly stealing human remains from the historic Mount Moriah Cemetery. Investigators discovered over 100 sets of human remains, including skulls and mummified parts, at his home and storage unit. He faces hundreds of criminal counts, including burglary, abuse of a corpse, and desecration of public monuments, and is currently held on $1 million bail.

Note: Yes, I know we're pronouncing "Gerlach" wrong. We noticed after the fact while we were already away. We'd normally just re-record those parts, but we don't have the set up to do that overseas. This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Oakland, California, to discuss the case of 18-year-old Nia Wilson, a beautiful young woman who had dreams of joining the military or becoming a paramedic so that she could help people. On the evening of July 22nd, 2018, Nia and her sisters, Letifah and Tashiya, were transferring trains at the MacArthur BART station in Oakland after attending a family party. Without provocation or prior interaction, 27-year-old John Lee Cowell approached them from behind and slashed Nia’s throat, also stabbing Letifah in the neck. Nia died at the scene within minutes. Letifah survived the attack with serious injuries. Tashiya was not physically harmed. John was arrested the following day at the Pleasant Hill BART station after a passenger recognized him from surveillance footage and tipped off police. During the trial, John's defense argued he was legally insane, citing a history of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. John himself gave bizarre testimony, claiming the sisters were "aliens."

This week, Drewby and Yergy head back over to Bakersfield, California, to discuss the case of 8-year-old Ger'Mya Amirah Alexander. On the morning of March 18, 2020, Bakersfield police responded to a report of a child not breathing. Ger'Mya was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries later that day. The Kern County Coroner ruled the death a homicide, citing multiple blunt force traumatic injuries alongside acute bronchopneumonia, sickle cell trait, and hypoxic respiratory failure. Clint Mason, the 37-year-old boyfriend of Ger'Mya's mother, was identified as the suspect. He was arrested on March 19, 2020, in Inglewood, California. Court reports revealed that he had assaulted Ger'Mya over several hours with a belt, a metal cane, and his hands because she had not finished her homework. In March of 2022, Clint was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for first-degree murder.

This week, Drewby and Yergy head down to Georgia to discuss the case of Romeo Jaxton Dru Angeles, also known as JD Williams. On January 14th, 2024, baby JD was found unresponsive in the dorm room of Trinity Poague, his father's new girlfriend. He later died at an area hospital from blunt force trauma to the head and torso. Trinity was an 18-year-old freshman student at Georgia Southwestern State University at the time of the crime, and the reigning Miss Donalsonville. In court, prosecutors argued that Trinity killed the child out of resentment and jealousy, presenting text messages where she stated she "hated" the child and "wanted to punch him". Medical experts testified that the child's severe injuries, including a skull fracture and liver laceration, were inconsistent with her claim that he had simply fallen off a bed.
