On First Concert Memories 34 we welcome friend of the show and 2 time former guest Ryan Condal, Co-Creator and Executive Producer of House of the Dragon, onto our monthly podcast about those special moments growing up when your favorite rock band is everything. Ryan transports us back to New Jersey in the late 1990's when he took his buddies and his little brother to see Rage Against The Machine with openers The Wu Tang Clan.
Hear the astute and well read Ryan talk about learning history through the lyrics of Rage Against The Machine and warming up for lacrosse games with it blaring over the field. He espouses about the tones and funky sounds of guitarist Tom Morello laying the foundation for the anti-establishment lyrics from Zack de la Rocha. For Ryan's generation, Rage represented more than just the teenage angst of bands like Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins - they educated kids on why the world was unfair and what they needed to do to change that.
As The Wolf and Action Jackson are not only years older than Ryan but their musical tastes always skewed older for their own generation, they loved hearing from Ryan how RATM was such an important factor in molding his musical tastes but also his understanding of the world we live in. In addition to managing House of the Dragon, Ryan also runs a killer podcast - The Stuff That Dreams of Made Of - talking about classic movies, movie memorabilia, props in their collections and so much more.

Goldberg recounts growing up in Hastings-on-Hudson with classical, folk, and cast albums, then shifting to rock after discovering Dylan, the Beatles, and the Stones, and later covering Woodstock for Billboard in 1969. He explains moving from criticism to publicity, becoming Led Zeppelin’s publicist, and shaping press narratives around their massive ticket sales amid skeptical critics. Goldberg discusses co-directing and co-producing the 1979 No Nukes film, meeting Springsteen during editing, and securing approval to use key performances after adding political context. He also talks about his books, including the reissued memoir Bumping Into Geniuses, reacts emotionally to Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia,” praises the Nebraska film Deliver Me From Nowhere, shares work with Bonnie Raitt and Steve Earle, and answers the “Mary” question about Thunder Road.

Prisoners of Rock and Roll: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Got It Right This Year

It’s easy and honestly fun to complain about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Every year, they announce a class of inductees and music fans rise up in anger asking “how is so and so not in yet” or “how did this person get in before that person.” Or, my favorite, “what? That person isn’t even rock and roll.” We all do it. Hell, we’ve done entire episodes on how the Rock Hall screwed up.
But the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the inductees for the class of 2026 and they pretty much got it right this year.
Phil Collins finally getting kudos for his solo career, Billy Idol with that punk-pop sneer, Iron Maiden crashing the metal gates, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis bringing the Britpop attitude, the smooth sounds of Sade, R&B king Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan changing the game.
They rounded it out with Early Influence nods, Musical Excellence awards, and even Ed Sullivan for bringing rock into living rooms.
Look, it’s not the purest guitar-rock kickass class ever inducted, but it actually reflects how music evolved and shaped culture.
