Locked On Astros - Daily Podcast On The Houston Astros

The Houston Astros’ GM search is heating up, with Milwaukee Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine emerging as the reported leading candidate. Brett “Htown Wheelhouse” Chancey breaks down Kleine’s résumé, the other contenders and the decisions facing owner Jim Crane on this episode of Locked On Astros.
Could Kleine help reshape Houston’s roster, strengthen player development and lead the search for the next Astros manager? We examine his experience in scouting, roster construction, contract negotiations and financial planning—and why clear authority matters for whoever gets the job. Plus, we discuss internal candidates Gavin Dickey and Charles Cook and the broader search across MLB front offices.
Then, an Astros postseason connection returns to the spotlight: Jason Lane is back in the World Series as the Brewers’ offense and strategy coordinator. We revisit his home run and final-out catch in the 2005 NLCS clincher, what Houston’s first National League pennant meant and his remarkable journey from outfielder to pitcher to longtime coach.
Finally, Astros prospect Nick Monistere is making up for lost development time in the Arizona Fall League. After sports hernia surgery interrupted his first full professional season, the 2025 fourth-round pick has an opportunity to regain his rhythm. We discuss his encouraging Fayetteville numbers, difficult return at High-A Asheville and what to watch next.
⚾ On this episode:
• Astros GM candidates: Matt Kleine, Gavin Dickey, Charles Cook and more
• Jim Crane’s role and Houston’s next manager search
• Jason Lane’s 2005 Astros legacy and World Series return
• Nick Monistere’s recovery and Arizona Fall League opportunity

Houston Astros eye Matt Klein for next GM as front office overhaul gains steam. Klein, a Milwaukee Brewers assistant GM with deep scouting and player development roots, was spotted alongside owner Jim Crane, sparking speculation about a fresh leadership direction for the perennial contenders. Will Houston continue Crane’s trend of hiring first-time GMs, or seek experience to guide their next chapter?
Hosts Eric Heisman and Brett Chancey break down Klein’s analytic pedigree, the Astros’ search for roster efficiency under payroll constraints, and what a “soft rebuild” could mean for stars like Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Peña. The show spotlights other candidates—Josh Barfield, Randy Flores, Scott Sharp, and Ben Sustanovich—and the strategic hiring of Spencer Madick as director of pitching, signaling a renewed data-driven emphasis on player development. Is Houston primed for sustained dominance or overdue for a retool? The answers could shape the AL West for years to come.
