How Much Freedom Is Your Child Ready For?
When should a child be allowed to stay home alone, walk to a friend's house, ride farther from home, get a phone, or spend more time without a parent nearby?
There isn't one age that works for every child.
In this episode of Equipped To Be, Connie Albers shares a practical framework parents can use when deciding whether a child is ready for greater independence: Range, Readiness, and Responsibility.

Consider the specific freedom your child is asking for
Evaluate maturity and readiness instead of relying on age alone

Protecting children and preparing them for independence are not opposites. As children grow, wise parenting gradually shifts from making decisions for them to teaching them how to make sound decisions for themselves.
