History of the Papacy Podcast

In the early nineteenth century, a stretch of upstate New York became one of the most spiritually charged regions in American history. Known as the Burned Over District, this frontier landscape was shaped by relentless revivals, bold preachers, and a growing belief that individuals could choose salvation and reshape society. In this episode of the History of the Papacy Podcast, Steve Guerra is joined by historian John Fagant of the Buffalo Presidential Center (https://www.buffalopresidentialcenter.org) to explore how the Second Great Awakening transformed western New York into a proving ground for religious innovation. At the center of the story is Charles Grandison Finney, whose revival campaigns challenged older ideas of predestination and emphasized free will, moral responsibility, and action. The conversation traces how revival culture spilled beyond churches into abolitionism, women’s rights, education reform, and other movements that continue to shape American public life. From early canal towns to rapidly expanding industrial cities, in this episode, we are joined by fellow Buffalonian John Fagant, trustee of the Buffalo Presidential Center to explore how Catholic immigrants and clergy shaped American communities during a time of major growth. Using the story of frontier-era Buffalo as a case study, we follow how the Erie Canal, massive migration from Ireland and Germany, parish building, and rising nativism transformed both urban life and the Catholic Church. The episode also looks at church–state conflicts, public schooling debates, social tensions, and the national political landscape leading up to the Civil War. This is a great look at how movement, growth, and faith changed the landscape of the United States.
