Is the Tennessee Titans’ Week 1 game against the New York Jets already a must-win?

Austin Stanley, Easton Freeze and JT Ruhnke debate the unusually high stakes surrounding the Titans’ 2026 NFL season opener—and they do not agree.

Austin and JT believe Tennessee must defeat New York. Easton rejects the idea that any opening-week game can qualify as a true must-win. But the answer depends upon who would actually feel the consequences of a Titans loss.

A defeat would not threaten Robert Saleh’s job security, change Cam Ward’s future as Tennessee’s franchise quarterback or place the new Titans coaching staff in immediate danger. The roster would not be dismantled because of one result, and the season would not mathematically end after Week 1.

The pressure surrounding the game extends beyond those traditional football consequences.

The Titans have spent recent seasons near the bottom of the NFL standings. Another disappointing opening result against a beatable opponent would affect the portion of the fan base desperate for evidence of progress, the franchise’s business operation, local interest surrounding the team and the broader Nashville ecosystem that benefits when the Titans are competitive.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk also needs to see her franchise begin moving in the right direction following major organizational changes.

Then there is Saleh’s personal motivation.

The Titans head coach faces the franchise that fired him during the 2024 season. Several Tennessee players also have connections to New York, creating an obvious revenge-game storyline entering Week 1.

Titans defensive lineman Jacob Martin discussed the importance of using revenge as motivation. Cam Ward acknowledged that Tennessee’s players want to defeat the Jets for their head coach. Former Jets defensive lineman Solomon Thomas also provided revealing insight into the deteriorating relationship between Saleh and New York before the coach was dismissed.

Saleh will publicly treat Sunday like another NFL game, but can Tennessee’s players use that emotion without allowing it to become a distraction?

The Titans enter the new season attempting to escape the bottom of the NFL standings and establish a sustainable foundation around second-year quarterback Cam Ward.
