The Padres offense kept the hits coming- going 5-9 with runners in scoring position- to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 and keep the momentum going with the sweep of this quick 2-game series to move back ahead of the Giants and into 2nd place behind the Dodgers in the NL West. Elias Diaz went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, Luis Arraez went 2-4 with a run scored and and RBI, Fernando Tatis Jr had 3 hits and scored a run at the top of the lineup, Manny Machado added an RBI single, and Jose Iglesias and Tyler Wade each knocked in a run.Starting Pitcher Michael King went 5 2/3 innings, giving up just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking just 1 hitter, and Robert Suarez pitched lights out in the 9th to pick up his 12th save. The Pads took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Gavin Sheets scored on Tyler Wade’s 2-out single off Giants’ starter Landen Roupp.Elias Diaz added a solo home run in the 3rd to make it 4-0 San Diego. The Pads would add 2 more to make it 4-0 in the 5th when Manny Machado drove in Fernando Tatis Jr. with an RBI single, and Luis Arraez scored on Jose Iglesias’ infield hit. Machado probably saved a couple runs with his brilliant defensive play to rob Willie Adames in the 6th, diving to his left and throwing to 2nd from his butt to get the force out. The Giants scored once before King came out with 2 outs in the 6th with 2 on and 2 out. Jeremiah Estrada struck out Matt Chapman to end the threat. Luis Arraez tripled in Diaz with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th to push the lead back up to 5-1. The Giants added a run in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to make it 5-3 on solo HR’s by Helios Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski. Yastrzemski- grandson of the great Carl “Yaz” Yastrzemski- hit his off Jason Adam, who then walked Adames. But Jason Heyward’s running, diving catch to rob Jung Ho Lee for the 2nd out got Adam back on track, and he struck out Chapman to end the inning.Suarez then came in and shut the door.***** ‘LIVE’ Instant Reaction from Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber ——-The Pads are off tomorrow before heading east to start a 9-game road trip with a game at Pittsburgh Friday night. 1st pitch is set for 3:40pm PT, with Dylan Cease (1-2, 5.76 ERA) taking the mound for the Padres against the Pirates’ Mitch Keller.
