The San Diego Padres dropped the rubber match of their three-game series against the New York Mets, falling 7-3 at Petco Park despite another huge performance from Freddy Fermin.
Fermin continued his breakout weekend, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a double, and all three Padres RBIs. After snapping an 0-for-30 slump on Saturday with the game-winning homer, Fermin followed it up with another massive offensive performance and now has 7 RBI over his last two games.
The Padres, however, could not overcome an early deficit. Randy Vásquez allowed four runs over four innings as the Mets jumped ahead early behind Marcus Semien’s solo home run and a big fifth inning. After Fermin cut the deficit to 4-2, Yuki Matsui surrendered back-to-back home runs to Melendez and Colby Benge that effectively put the game away.
Benge was the star for New York, finishing a perfect 5-for-5 with a home run, triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Juan Soto went hitless but drove in a run as the Mets collected 13 hits and took the series.
